Textbooks Online

Recently I have been asked the question, "Can the Science and Social Studies Textbook still be found online?" Absolutely (though the Social Studies website has not been cooperating with us lately.. still worth a try)!

Science .. http://activities.macmillanmh.com/science/ca/
1) Click on Online Student Edition (OSE)
2) Username : casci05
3) Password: redwood

Social Studies... http://www.mhln.com/
1) Click on the Student tab
2) Enter class code: Owen2007

You will find our textbook listed by grade level.

As for Language Arts.. http://www.eduplace.com/ has a number of activities that go along with each of our themes and stories. However, unfortunately, they don't have the entire textbook online!

Hope this helps!!!

Science Brochure Standards

Life Sciences

2. Plants and animals have structures for respiration, digestion, waste disposal, and transport of materials. As a basis for understanding this concept:

a. Students know many multicellular organisms have specialized structures to support the transport of materials.

b. Students know how blood circulates through the heart chambers, lungs, and body and how carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2) are exchanged in the lungs and tissues.

c. Students know the sequential steps of digestion and the roles of teeth and the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and colon in the function of the digestive system.

d. Students know the role of the kidney in removing cellular waste from blood and converting it into urine, which is stored in the bladder.

e. Students know how sugar, water, and minerals are transported in a vascular plant.

f. Students know plants use carbon dioxide (CO2) and energy from sunlight to build molecules of sugar and release oxygen.

g. Students know plant and animal cells break down sugar to obtain energy, a process resulting in carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (respiration).

It is that time of the year again.... Human Organ System Travel Brochure...

The assignment was handed out today, and tomorrow I will be sending home an informational parent letter home. Below you will find the assignment .... please take the time to read it over and feel free to ask me any questions you may have.

Travel Brochure of the Human Body Systems

Your team of 4 or 5 at the Duodenum Dynamics Ad Agency have been hired as a travel consultant to design a luxury tour through the Human Body Systems. Before you can collect your fee from the Anatomy Travel Bureau, you must produce a brochure. The owner of the travel bureau, Mr. Seymore Sphincter, has informed you that in order to win the contract you must highlight the trendy spots, the exciting activities, and the imports and exports of the areas. For insurance considerations, you must also discreetly mention any possible dangers or special precautions that tourists might encounter in visiting these systems. Your world body tour will focus mostly on visits to the following systems: (1) Digestive, (2) Respiratory, (3) Circulatory (4) Excretory. You need to briefly mention “driving by” the following systems on your tour: skeletal system, muscular system, nervous system, immune system, integumentary system, endocrine system, and reproductive system

Format

There will be 5 sections, plus the cover.

The key feature is to give an overall sense of the organization and function of each of the 4 main systems. You may use drawings, computer graphics, pictures from magazines, journals, or books to help in your advertisement of each system. Whenever possible, type all written parts of brochure. Let your imagination run WILD!

Welcome to 5th Grade

Clearly, I am a little overdue with this update. It is 8 weeks into 5th grade already! How quickly time flies.

So far, the year has been full of learning and fun! My students are slowly understanding how different 5th grade is from 4th grade. Here are a few of the events that have taken place:

The Fall Fundraising is almost coming to an end. The order forms are due on Wednesday, Oct 21st.

We had our first Meet the Master Assembly today about Pablo Picasso. Next Tuesday we will be doing the art lesson that goes along with the assembly. We have also been using the new district art program called Arts Attack. The students have really been enjoying doing the various art projects.

This Saturday is the PTA Harvest Carnival. We have two booths this year. Please come and support our booths.. we need volunteers to help sell! Also, the money raised this year will help pay for the 6th grade expenses.

We are about to have our first Market Day in a few weeks (though I will not announce the date yet). Start thinking of your amazing ideas of what to make and sell! Can't wait to see the creativity in the room!

Our next rewards assembly is on October 30th!! Please come dressed in your Halloween costume!! Can you try to guess what I will be?????

OK... I have given you a bit of an update on all the happenings at Valley View and our classroom! More to come.....
